Softball isn’t one of those sports that has a time limit like basketball or football. It’s more like tennis, where the match can last many, many hours.

Softball doesn’t have quarters or halves, rather has a “goal” that you need to complete in order to win the game. Similar to baseball, softball uses innings as the basic unit of play, but the difference between baseball and softball is that baseball has 9 innings and softball has 7.

Length of a Softball Game

Given that the game has 7 innings, the game usually lasts for 2 hours. But, it’s also possible that the game lasts longer or shorter than that period, which is dependent on how many innings there are in the game.

Softball rules permit that you can have anywhere between 3 and 7 innings for a game. But, 7 is the most usual number of innings for a game of softball, since 7 innings are both used in Olympic Softball, NCAA softball, and high school softball games.

For younger players, they may play 6 innings in a softball game at some tournaments. It’s also a possibility that the owners of the tournaments create their own rules, hence changing the number of innings played in the game. Since there are many leagues you can play in, there is also a chance that you can stumble upon a league that has a time limit for a game’s length, but that is not that common.

Rules

We’ve mentioned that the game has 7 innings. An inning is split into the top and bottom, or the first half and the second half. Both teams have offensive and defensive roles. First, one team tries to score three outs during the first or “top” half of the game. Meanwhile, the opposite team is defending. After the defensive team records three outs, then they become the offensive side, making the switching of the roles. The winning team is whichever one has the most runs.

Longest NCAA Softball Game In History

In the introduction, we said that softball games can last many hours to complete. Back in 1991, two teams, Creighton and Utah Softball have etched their names in the history of softball by participating in the longest ever NCAA softball game that took more than 6 hours to complete.

Creighton won that game, but the second one needed to be played so we can know the winner of the conference champion. The second game took 25 innings to complete and crown the winner, Utah.

Here is a short clip from that historic game:

Longest Ever Softball Game

But, the longest softball game in history, and the one that holds the Guinness World record was played in Canada in 2009. Team Stollery and Team Cross have participated in an absolute marathon of a softball game, which was played for 115 hours! Just let that sink in.
